Part II: The subtypes of Attention Deficit Disorders

Maggie Reyes

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) along with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder with impulsivity are all considered subtypes of Attention Deficit Disorders. While more research needs to be done, studies indicated there is no one specific cause responsible for the disorder. It has been shown that ADD and ADHD is a combination of certain factors.

Causes

According to recent studies genetic factors do play a key role in the formation of this disorder. A child with relatives who suffer from ADD or ADHD is more likely to develop the disorder than others who have no family history. Environmental factors are also influences. Exposure to certain toxic substances during pregnancy along with a pregnant mother who drinks alcohol, takes drugs or smokes can lead to the type of brain lesions causing ADD or ADHD. Certain psychosocial factors can also contribute. If the mother suffers from high stress or anxiety during the pregnancy or if one of the parents has a psychopedagogical disorder, this can predispose a child towards an attention deficit disorder.

Treatment

While there is no cure for ADD there are treatments that can decrease the symptoms and help a child feel better. Treatment is highly individualized and depends on each patient.

Psychological

Behavioral therapy has some success. The child can be analyzed the child through psychological tools that identify factors reinforcing their ADD behavior. This is usually done in conjunction with family therapy where parents or guardians are educated about the problem and the role they play in improving behavior.

Pharmacotherapy

There are medicines that help improve the symptoms of this disorder. For ADD is very common to use medications that stimulate the brain to improve concentration and memory. With ADHD, additional medicine is added to reduced hyperactivity and control aggressive behavior.

Psychopedagogical

Teachers can be brought into the treatment plan so work together with parents in order to develop psychological therapies to help the child with learning. Extra hours of class time can be added to an individualized schedule to help the child be more successful in school.

Natural remedies

There are many natural remedies that can help prevent or lessen the ADD symptoms. These include:

  • Nutripur Genius Kids & Teens capsules
  • Boiron Quietude
  • Jamieson Omega 3 children's gummies.
  • New Nordic Equazen

If you feel that your child has some of these symptoms, talk to your doctor first. It can be very difficult to diagnose ADD or ADHD with children under four years of age. It’s important to keep in mind that any child may present one or two of the symptoms discussed in this article, but this does not mean that the child has ADD.
